Rules and discipline
At the Abbey VC Junior School we are particularly concerned with encouraging and maintaining good behaviour, this has lead us to adopt an assertive discipline approach to behaviour. Our “Good Behaviour Policy” helps children understand clearly what is expected of them, what the rewards of good behaviour are and what the consequences are of breaking the School Rules. All parents receive a copy of our policy when their child starts at the Abbey.
The school’s legal responsibility for its pupils stops once the pupils are outside the school gate. Nevertheless we hope you will keep in mind the school’s reputation, and yours as parents, if children misbehave on the way to and from school. We must urge our children to adopt responsible attitudes towards others and their property. To that end self-discipline must be the answer.
February 2008
Your children may have talked about something called a 'Praise Ticket' and I am sure some of them have tried to explain what they mean and what happens when they collect four of them.
Shortly before Christmas each class spent time in the Class Council meetings discussing the School Rules, Incentives and Consequences (School Behaviour Policy). These views and opinions were then discussed by the School Council and the staff in readiness for redrafting the policy. The views of the children were particularly interesting, especially with regards to how fairly the policy was used.
After much discussion these are the new Rules, Incentives and Consequences.

2. Be polite, kind and respectful of others
3. Use equipment for its proper use
4. Move sensibly around the school
5. Keep hands and feet to yourself

2. Stickers
3. Credits for improving behaviour
4. Positive notes in Home School Diary
5. Praise Ticket from class teacher
6. Head Teacher Reward for collecting 4 Praise Tickets
Consequences
1. Quiet word
2. Warning
3. Work in another class for 10 minutes
4. Miss playtime or 15 minutes at lunchtime. Sent to Mr Prince with note in diary, informing parents of problem

Praise Tickets
To receive a Praise Ticket a child must behave perfectly for a whole week (something that many children do week in week out). When they have collected four they receive a special reward. The first reward was a film show including a drink and popcorn!
Achievements Board
This has been modernised and now includes not just the children who get Workers of the Week certificates, but also photographs of other achievements from both home and school. All the children had the chance to design the new board and here is the winner.
